Sundyne Pumps and Compressors Help Refineries Address EPA Tier 3 Requirements

ARVADA, COLO. October 12, 2017 – Sundyne, a global leader in the design and manufacture of pumps and compressors for use in oil, gas and petrochemical production, today highlighted how its pumps and compressors are being used in refineries to achieve low-sulfur requirements. Many of the larger refineries in the United States have already leveraged Sundyne’s technology as part of their efforts to achieve Tier 3 compliance. Smaller refineries have until 2020 to address EPA Tier 3 emissions standards.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 3 fuel and vehicle standards are designed to reduce toxic air pollution from cars and trucks. These standards affect refineries by requiring lower sulfur content in gasoline, diesel and other refined fuel products. Sulfur is typically removed through a complex process called hydrodesulfurization (HDS), which is expensive, complicated and governed by its own set of strict safety protocols.

The key for most refiners to address Tier 3 standards is to remove sulfur from the largest blend component, otherwise known as Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) gasoline. The FCC Gasoline hydrotreater, also called the FCC naphtha hydrotreater, is the process unit most often upgraded to meet the Tier 3 clean fuel requirements.

Sundyne’s portfolio of pumps and compressors are tested and proven to address the specific head, flow, temperature, viscosity, operating range and efficiency requirements of the HDS process. Sundyne’s API-compliant pumps are designed to handle feed charge, bottoms, overhead reflux, sour water and amine services, and other functions supporting hydrocarbon and water services. Sundyne’s integrally geared centrifugal compressors are less expensive than multi-stage barrel machines and more reliable than competitive reciprocating technologies.

“All refineries in the United States must comply with the EPA’s emission standards by January 1, 2020, and operators that have not yet achieved compliance need an efficient process to upgrade their hydrodesulfurization units,” said Sundyne’s Keith Hamilton, Oil & Gas Regional Sales Manager, Americas. “Our consulting expertise helping refineries determine their best compliance options, combined with our leading technology can help refineries move quickly through each stage of the upgrade. We also provide the implementation services and the ongoing support needed to ensure long term reliability, safety and peace of mind.”

Refineries and EPCs interested in learning more about Sundyne’s technology and services expertise for addressing Tier 3 requirements can meet with Sundyne executives at the upcoming UOP FCC/Merox Conference at the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort on October 23-27th.
